Freya is the golden girl as she doubles up with record time in Glasgow
Great Britain’s Freya Anderson completed a freestyle double with victory in the 200m at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Glasgow last night.
The 18-year-old, who secured her maiden individual medal at this level and a European title with an impressive victory in the 100m freestyle on Friday, clocked a new national record of 1:52.77 in the 200m final.
That was 0.11 of a second quicker than Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, with Holland’s Femke Heemskerk taking bronze.
Training partners Duncan Scott and Scott McLay thrilled the home crowd with a silver finish to the day as Great Britain grabbed second place in last night’s 4x50m mixed freestyle relay final at the city’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
The two Scotts and Anna Hopkin swam the opening three legs before the allconquering Anderson overtook France on the last two lengths of the Tollcross pool. Russia took gold in 1min 28.31secs with Britain just 0.33 behind.
Scott had earlier qualified for today’s 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley finals, although he was only sixth-quickest in his number one event, the freestyle.
Joe Litchfield also progressed to the final of the men’s 100m individual medley alongside Scott.
2014 Commonwealth 200m champion Ross Murdoch struggled in last night’s 100m breaststroke final, trailing in eighth place at halfway and failing to improve over the second 50m as he finished last in 57.07secs.
Siobhan-Marie O’Connor claimed bronze for Britain in the 200m individual medley to make up for narrowly missing out on a medal in the 100m on Friday.
The British record holder in this event swam the fastest qualifying time (2:08.92).
Beating that time by more than two seconds meant the 24-year-old took third, with a time of 2:06.74.
However, O’Connor failed to qualify for the 100m butterfly final after she finished seventh in her semi-final.
