Blurred lines? Eye spy the perfect recipe for that fabulous feline flick
It’s one of the hardest make-up tricks to master... how to get the perfect eyeliner flick. However, anyone can do it with a little practice, says Rachel Hardie, senior lead artist with make up brand Nars.
“Eyeliner is a fantastic way to add definition to your eyes and lashes and can instantly, give you the appearance of being more awake,” said Rachel.
Wake up refreshed
We all have days when our eyes – and bodies – are tired.
The pressures of work, lack of sleep and dark mornings and nights that the winter season brings can leave our peepers in need of a little TLC, and the feline flick is definitely a quick fix to faking a refreshed face.
“Even a touch of pencil, blended softly can really enhance the eye, instantly warming it without appearing too harsh,” said Rachel.
“But the feline flick is one of the oldest – and most effective – tricks in the make-up trade.
“Its a classic look that has a timeless element.
“A clean, crisp line flatters all eye shapes.
“I find a product like the Nars Carpates Stylo Liner (£21) is the best way to achieve this.
“It has a long lasting effect and also the tip can really help you create the perfect line effortlessly.”
Winging it
Rachel advises firstly taking the time to look at your eye shape to decide the thickness of the wing.
“If you don’t have a huge amount of lid space, I would keep the line as close to the lash as possible,” she said.
“I sometimes press the liquid liner from underneath the lashes to create a really tight line.
“Follow your natural curve and, once at the outer corner of your eye, stop and open the eye fully, straight on to sketch your wing.
“The shape will fully depend on your own eye shape. Then once sketched, bring the line back from the tip to connect.”
About that base
Years in the make-up trade have taught Rachel some important hacks when it comes to eyeliner.
“I apply the base first,” she said. “I like to spend my time creating the perfect canvas, before going on to do the eyes.
“You can always then touch up or correct liner mistakes once the liner is complete.
“If I ever need to correct a liner mishap, I use a cotton bud, dipped in make-up remover and swipe down.
“You need a product that is oil-free. This stops smudging and makes it easy to correct.
“To sharpen up the wings, you can use a Nars Push Liner Brush (£25) and a minimal amount of concealer to give a clean line.”
