A pensioner’s £20,000 savings stored in old Bisto tins was thrown out by mistake but rescued after a search at a rubbish dump in West Dunbartonshire. What’s your biggest loss?

My granny’s wedding ring. It had been so precious to me. I pulled it off at work while drying my hands with a paper towel and accidentally threw it in the bin. I never missed it until the next day, but the bins were empty. I will never forgive myself for my mistake.

My husband gave me a pair of earrings years ago. I lost one, searched everywhere, but couldn’t find it. He died three years ago. A few months later the lost earring turned up in my jewellery box. I have used that box many times in the 20-plus years since I lost the earring. I like to think it was a gift from my husband and I am enjoying wearing the earrings again.

Margaret Gibb

I lost my wedding ring in the sea in the south of France in August 1977, just nine months after we were married. I always wonder if it has washed up and been found in the intervening 43 years.

When I was seven the glass fell out of my watch on the train and the hands fell out. We found the glass but not the hands. It was my gran’s ornate silver watch. I still have it – but with no hands!

Elizabeth o’regan

My wedding ring, while swimming in the River Lossie. After borrowing a diving mask I found it again.

Andrew Clubb

A black bag filled with wool which I accidentally put in the skip. I can still feel mum’s disapproval after 19 years!

Joan Fordyce

I lost an envelope containing my wages. I reported the loss and within an hour received a call from the police to say an honest person had handed it in.

James Walker

A watch in 1967. I’m still grieving.
