Halliday has no desire for a winter holiday

Rangers utility man Andy Halliday is in favour of scrapping the winter break.

The Light Blues went to Dubai for a warmweather training camp when the Premiership went into cold storage last month, but have struggled badly on their return.

They have lost to Hearts and Kilmarnock, and drawn at home to Aberdeen.

“Personally, I would like to just keep going, and that is not because of what has happened to us over the last two years,” said the 28-year-old.

“In England, teams like Liverpool and Manchester City have had a lot of games and have pushed hard for a winter break.

“But up here, in the last game before the break, we got a very positive result at Parkhead and the momentum was with us.

“Then you are into the two-week shutdown and sometimes – and clearly it has happened this year – it sets you back.

“Our form has dipped, and I just don’t think we have played well at all.

“Rangers fans are not too happy right now, and if you are walking down the street, everyone is asking,‘What has changed?’.

“It is really, really, hard to put your finger on the reason why. People say fatigue, but plenty of other teams who have played as many times haven’t had the same problems.

“We have to sort it because any more blips could be seriously damaging to any challenges we might muster.”

Halliday has also been suffering on a personal level, as his first-team opportunities have been limited this season.

“It is frustrating because, first and foremost, I am a competitor, every single day, and I am from Monday to Friday as we work towards a game on a Saturday,” he said.

“So it is hard being out the team. But for the majority of the season, I have to hold my hand up and say I can’t exactly be chapping the gaffer’s door.

“Borna Barisic’s form this year has improved significantly and he is playing really well.

“If that is the case and the team’s getting results, you don’t have a leg to stand on in terms of asking the gaffer to change it.

“My contract is up in the summer, but the bigger picture is what we do on the park right now.

“I have always seen myself as one of the leaders in the dressing room.

“So, although I am a competitor, sometimes you need to put the ego aside and help the boys who are playing.”
