Sorn Inn

Village main street, 8km east of Mauchline, and 25km from Ayr. Pub with rooms. Restaurants and tables in bar. Family-run (the Grants, with chef Craig Grant). Consistently classic, comforting food and steaks rarely come better than this – a homey rural gastropub experience. Seven days. sorninn.com (01290) 551305

Lion & Unicorn

Since 1635! On A873 off A84 road between M9 and Callander, near Lake of Menteith in the Trossachs. On main road through Thornhill. They come from miles around for pub grub and sizzling steaks. Three cosy dining areas, open fires and a real garden. Changing menu (including a gluten-free one), not too fancy, just nice. Seven days, noon-9pm. lion-unicorn.co.uk 01786 850204
