Morton continued their move up the table towards the play-off places and took their undefeated league run to eight games with a 4-0 win over Queen of the South.

And manager David Hopkin hailed his players for the way they tackled the difficult gale conditions.

“They started the game well and were fantastic in very difficult conditions,” he said.

“They’re starting to build as a team, they’re starting to build momentum, and it’s another three points towards where we want to be.”

The Greenock side, with the wind behind them, had the bulk of the early pressure but could find no way through to goal and Queens managed to weather the early flurry and began to test the Morton defenders with breaks down the wing.

But it was Morton who broke the deadlock in 25 minutes when the defenders failed to clear a cross from Cadden and Reghan Tumilty was on the spot to ram the ball home from close range.

The Dumfries men had a set back just before the break when Scott Mercer seemed to be struggling with an injury and had to be replaced by Lithuanian striker Deimantas Petravicius.

But there was no stopping

Morton and Cadden was again the provider as he cut a ball in from the wing for Aidan Nesbitt to turn it into the net just on the break with the Dumfries defenders all at sea.

Then it was the Greenock side’s turn to find it uncomfortable in the face of the wind.

Keeper Danny Rogers then was forced into a diving save as the Dumfries men stepped up the pressure in a bid to haul themselves back into it.

But in a lull in the storm Morton made a break in 78 minutes and Cadden cut in from the wing to beat his marker and slot the ball home.

Queens players seemed to realise it was all over and had a look of no hope as they struggled on.

Then in the dying minutes Morton snatched a fourth goal as a defender trying to clear struck the ball against Craig McGuffie and it rebounded into the net.
