Fiasco is like Brexit revisited for Stranraer

Stranraer chairman Iain Dougan has described the SPFL vote fiasco as being like “Brexit revisited”.

The Stair Park club voted against the proposal to end the season early for clubs below the Premiership.

That would have seen Stranraer relegated from League One.

Dougan, however, maintained his own club’s financial position was not his main motivation for voting “No”.

He was as bemused as anyone by the way events unfolded on Friday night, with Dundee seeming to have voted “No”and then withholding their vote when it didn’t arrive.

He said: “It was like an episode of House Of Cards, with a cliffhanger at the end just to make you watch the next episode.

“There’s no football being played but there’s certainly plenty of games being played.

“It was like Brexit revisited. I think the only person not involved was Putin and the rest of the Kremlin.

“It doesn’t make us look good.

“I know there are far greater things going on the world, but football will return. We need to get our house in order before it does.

Dougan repeated his opposition to clubs, including his own, being sent down when they could still have avoided the drop.

He went on “We’ve been in this position three years out of the last six – at the same time as this closedown we were in danger of possibly getting relegated.

“Three times out of six we’ve got out of it.

“If you do it on the sporting field and you’re not good enough, you’re not good enough.

“Partick Thistle’s situation is a lot worse than ours. They are being penalised for playing in the semi-final of the Tunnock’s Cup.

“If they had played in the league that day and won, they wouldn’t be bottom of the league. Surely that’s unjust.

“I don’t want any club to be out of pocket because they can’t get their prize money.

“With us being bottom of the league, our pay out would be very, very little — it would be buttons.

“It wouldn’t make a great deal of difference to us, but a Falkirk or Raith would get a chunk of money to keep them going.”
