Light Blues want SPFL chief Doncaster suspended Rangers go to war
Rangers believe they have the ammunition to take down Neil Doncaster.
The Ibrox club have called for the SPFL’s Chief Executive to be suspended, along with the governing body’s legal advisor, Rod McKenzie.
They want the sensational measure taken to allow for an independent investigation into the controversial vote on calling the season on the lower leagues.
They say they have ‘whistleblower’ evidence that raises serious concerns about the handling of the process.
Interim chairman Douglas Park said: “The lack of leadership from the SPFL as a members’ organisation has shocked me.”
The League have hit back by issuing a ‘put-up-orshut-up’ challenge.
At the moment, it’s all guesswork.
But it would have been a huge step in the right direction if Dundee had cast their vote.
If the other 41 clubs could do it in good time for the 5pm deadline on Friday night, why couldn’t they?
The circumstances are clouded, but the Dens Park club have left themselves wide open.
However, they are now in the position where the casting vote is in their hands.
Every club will have its own thoughts, and most of the voting will have had self-interest at the forefront.
I think the alternative resolution put forward by Rangers – to hand out part of the prize money just now – had lots of merit.
The SPFL countered that by saying that it didn’t stand up to legal scrutiny.
But these are unprecedented times, and that has to be taken into account.
Rangers have now called for a probe into the voting system, and called for SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster to be suspended.
This has all become very messy. There has to be proper discussion and debate.
A decision as important as this does not need to be rushed, and has to be reached fairly.
From the very start of all of this, I have said that the remaining games need to be played so that the season is brought to a natural conclusion.
I’ve not changed my mind.
If that means playing in July and August, then so be it.
Right now, UEFA is of the same mind. I just think that every avenue has to be explored to allow fairness.
It doesn’t sit right with me that Hearts and Partick Thistle and Stranraer should be relegated when there are a number of games still to play.
I totally understand their frustrations. But, of course, there is a wider picture in society just now, and we have to be mindful of what is happening to human life due to this pandemic.
Staying safe and healthy outweighs everything else – but football still needs to try to find the right answers.
And do it in the right way.
We’ve never seen anything like this in football before, and there will not be a perfect solution.
However, the SPFL must find the best way forward.
