Dobbie is ready to keep on rolling

Queen of the South goal machine Stephen Dobbie will turn 38 in December.

But the bad news for Championship defenders is that the veteran striker intends to keep on scoring when football emerges from lockdown – and into his 40s.

Dobbie, who has also found the net for Hibs, St Johnstone, Dumbarton, Swansea City, Blackpool (firing them into the Premier League in 2010), Brighton, Crystal Palace, Fleetwood Town and Bolton in a nomadic career, has become a Doonhamers legend.

He insists he’s far from finished.

His two spells at Palmerston have seen him rack up 162 goals in 263 matches, and he’s aiming to smash the 200 barrier.

“I’ve signed for next year, but I always wait until December/January time to see how the legs are doing and how I’m feeling,” he admitted.

“I think you’ll know when age is catching up with you, but I’m still feeling fit and healthy.

“We’ll wait and see, but it would be nice to try to make it to 40.

“Yes, I’m still scoring goals (11 from 30 games this season) but, more importantly, I’m still enjoying it.

“As long as I’m waking up every morning and enjoying training, I’ll do it for as long as I can.

“If you’re waking up and not looking forward to going in to play football, then it’s the time to call it a day.”

Dobbie, who spent four seasons with Blackpool, still lives in Lytham with his young family and revealed he even savours the travelling.

“We’re settled there,” he said. “The kids love it and go to school there, so I can’t really see us moving now.

“The commute isn’t too bad because the train goes straight from Preston to Glasgow – and I get a bit of peace and quiet from the kids, which can be nice!”
