FROZEN IN TIME

-

With their first league title in 30 years secured, all that remains for Liverpool this season is to aim at setting more records.

But one milestone which won’t be surpassed in this – or probably any other campaign from now on – is that of the club’s oldest player.

That accolade is held by a Scot, Ned Doig, who played in goal for the Anfield outfit at the beginning of the last century.

Born in Arbroath, he started out with his hometown club, and impressed enough to be picked twice for Scotland. He remains the Red Lichties’ most-capped player.

A move to Blackburn Rovers was followed by him joining Sunderland, where he won four league titles.

In 1904, Liverpool – then in Division Two – signed Doig for £150, and he immediately helped the Reds win promotion.

He played his last game for them in 1908, aged 41 years and 165 days.
