Football salutes a towering legend
One of football’s greatest legends, Jack Charlton has died at the age of 85.
The former Republic of Ireland manager, Leeds United great and winner of a World Cup medal in 1966 along with brother Bobby, had been battling lymphoma and dementia for over a year.
As sporting stars and fans poured out their hearts in tributes and messages of sympathy, his family described Jack as a “thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories.”
Jack made 773 appearances for Leeds between 1950 and 1973, and the club said they were “deeply saddened” by his passing.
