A shot of a hogfish, photographed off the Florida Keys by Dr William Longley and National Geographic snapper Charles Martin signalled the first natural colour undersea photograph ever taken.
They used cameras encased in waterproof housing and several pounds of highlyexplosive magnesium flash powder for underwater illumination.
juLY 17, 1968
The Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine premiered in London on this date. The featurelength film, starring cartoon characters based on John, Paul, George and Ringo, made its world debut at the London Pavilion in Piccadilly Circus.
Three of the Beatles were in attendance with their partners, but Paul McCartney came solo. Three days later his fiance Jane Asher announced that their engagement had ended.

Pope John Paul II was hospitalised for three weeks to have tumour removed.
The benign growth in his colon could have developed into cancer without removal, the Roman Catholic leader’s doctors said. The surgery removed not only the tumour, but also a six to eight-inch section of the colon, or large intestine, to minimise risk of a recurrence.

Theresa May was elected Prime Minister by Conservative Party MPs, making her the first female to hold the role since Margaret Thatcher.
Following the resignation of David Cameron, May was tasked to lead the country out of the EU after Brexit. She stepped down in 2019.
