The Queen’s Silver Jubilee year had some less-than-regal moments. Broken goalposts at Wembley and punk rock taking hold of the music scene being two of them.

But all was as it should be down Wimbledon way as Virginia Wade gave the Centre Court their first British princess since Ann Jones eight years earlier.

After Wade had beaten Chris Evert in the semi-finals, many thought the title was in the bag, but she lost the first set 6-4 to Betty Stove of the Netherlands.

But the 31-year-old fought back 6-3, 6-1 to win the Rosewater Dish in Wimbledon’s Centenary year, with The Queen on hand to present it.
