American Clampett looked like he might just pull off the Hollywood victory at Troon – only to run out of gas.

The 22-year-old fired off a fiveunder-par opening round of 67 for a two-shot lead on the Ayrshire coast, before adding a second-round 66 to increase his lead to five.

Tough afternoons on days three and four saw him add 78 and 77, to finish in a tie for 10th, as Tom Watson secured the fourth of his five victories.
