Tigers need a miracle, says boss McCann

- By Benjamin Thomas sport@sundaypost.com

Hull manager Grant McCann knows it will take a miracle for his side to avoid relegation after a 1-0 defeat to Luton at the KCOM Stadium.

The Tigers succumbed to Kazenga LuaLua’s late goal which puts them on the brink of returning to League One for the first time since 2005.

“Of course we need a miracle,” McCann said. “We are on the brink, there is no point hiding behind, but it is still mathematically possible that we can stay up.”

Paul Cook refused to criticise Wigan’s players after they conceded a last-gasp equaliser at Charlton.

Macauley Bonne struck in the 93rd minute to earn the Addicks a point in a 2-2 draw at The Valley.

Jamal Lowe and Kieran Dowell scored either side of Alfie Doughty’s 11th-minute eveller.

“There will be no criticism,” Cook said. “We were set a really difficult task about two weeks ago and these lads have responded magnificently.”

Middlesbrough are still not safe from the drop after suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Cardiff.

Sean Morrison’s goal and Josh Murphy’s double put the Bluebirds in the driving seat, before Britt Assombalonga’s late consolation came just before Jonny Howson saw red for Boro.

Fulham maintained their hopes of automatic promotion with a 5-3 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday.

Neeskens Kebano and Aleksandr Mitrovic both scored twice and Bobby Reid added a fifth in added-on time, while Atdhe Nuhiu bagged an Owls brace and Jacob Murphy also netted for the visitors, before Fulham’s Harrison Reed was sent off at the death.

Goals from Ben Brereton, Adam Armstrong, Joe Rothwell and Sam Gallagher saw Blackburn edge out Reading 4-3. John Swift, Sam Baldock and Yakou Meite replied.

Millwall’s play-off hopes were ended by QPR, as the Hoops won the London derby 4-3.

Conor Masterson, Ryan Manning, Eberechi Eze and Todd Kane were on target for the hosts, while Matt Smith, Shaun Hutchinson and Jayson Molumby hit back.

Connor Roberts’ goal on the stroke of half-time gave Swansea a 1-0 win over Bristol City, to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Stewart Donald has resigned as Sunderland chairman.

Donald accepted the Black Cats’ failure to win promotion to the Championship is down to him and that he is committed to finding a new owner.

Elsewhere, Tranmere have announced the appointment of former assistant-boss Mike Jackson as their new first-team manager.
