The Sunday Post (Newcastle)

It wasn’t just the NHS that got us through

£25 STAR LETTER

-

The doctors, nurses and other NHS staff working through the lockdown have been marvellous but so has everyone who has helped the country keep going: bus drivers, supermarket workers, social carers, all of them. They have all gone out and done their job while the rest of us stayed at home staying safe.

The NHS deserves our thanks but I read that factory workers are twice as likely to die from Covid-19 than hospital staff. There are many, many people, ordinary people doing ordinary but crucial jobs, who deserve our thanks, too. Our hands should be sore clapping for all of them.

Prince of trails

So the Duke of Rothesay is off to the Castle of Mey for another holiday (Sunday Post, July 12).

This is the same man who scuttled off to his other Scottish holiday home in defiance of Government guidelines, pausing only to be tested for Covid.

When it suited him, he then scuttled back to London, again in defiance of guidelines. This pampered man and his wife obviously think that the rules of the real world do not apply to them.

Union man

If nothing else the coronavirus pandemic has shown the importance of the Union.

Even the staunchest Nationalist cannot fail to see that a split with Britain would have repercussions of monumental significance for Scotland. Our politicians at Holyrood should think of the people rather than themselves.

Issues of colour

Is it not time to stop seeing colour and just see people? The world would be a much better place if folk just tried to treat people as they wish to be treated themselves. See beyond colour.

Changing room?

I don’t know why Nicola Sturgeon doesn’t change the room for her daily briefings. It looks so depressing, like the back room in a funeral parlour. I’m not asking her to crack jokes but surely we’d feel a bit more positive about what’s getting said if the room was a bit brighter?

Stamp of approval

I’d like to say a huge thank you to readers who have replied to my requests for used stamps, through the Sunday Post’s Favours column.

I have collected stamps all of my life, and have spent many hours during lockdown looking through the many packets sent to me. As a collector, I only keep one of any new stamp issue. The vast majority sent to me have gone to, and will continue to go to, our local hospice, who are grateful to receive them. Please continue to save and send your stamps to 22 Coopers Close, High Hesket, Carlisle CA4 0JD. I will continue to refund postage.

Along with my six cats, the stamps keep me occupied and pass the time. Thank you for your ongoing kindness.
