Gogic hopes Easter Road move will evoke Greek memories

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Alex Gogic has the roar of a big crowd in his blood.

And the midfielder hopes he’ll experience something like the noise he grew up with by moving to Hibs.

Gogic loved his three years with Hamilton Accies, but – like most ambitious footballers – he wants to compete for honours.

The Easter Road atmosphere might not be as raucous as the one Gogic experienced during his time as a youth player with Olympiacos in Greece.

But it’s something he’s looking forward to.

He said: “When I was at Hamilton, you looked forward to playing in stadiums like Easter Road.

“You came out the tunnel, and there was always a buzz and an atmosphere.

“To play there every other week will be amazing.

“Some players don’t like the pressure of playing in front of a lot of football fans.

“Other players, like me, we love it. I enjoy that atmosphere.

“I can remember being a ball boy in Greece. There was always fireworks and crazy crowds.

“I just wanted to be singing with the fans and enjoying the pyrotechnics.”

The 26-year-old’s father, Sinsa, was a Cypriot international striker, who won the title four times with Olympiacos.

Gogic went on: “My favourite memory was when we won the league and celebrated, lifting the trophy and doing the lap of honour.

“The ball boys got to do that with the players.”

Gogic is comfortable playing for supporters with high expectations.

He said: “We have to be looking at top six, and a club like Hibs should be aiming for Europe.

“I like the way we play football and how attacking we are.

“Coming in as a defensive central midfielder will help the team not to concede goals, and win more games.

“I know what my job in the team is. It lets us be solid as a unit.

“I played for the Cypriot Under-21s, so coming to Hibs should hopefully help my chances of playing in the international team.”
