Rangers target Bongani Zungu has been told by Amiens manager, Luka Elsner, that he won’t play again for the club because he’s desperate to quit.

The South African midfielder has been linked with a £2-million move to Ibrox, but the deal has yet to be finalised.

Zungu has not played a single minute for the relegated Ligue 1 club in their pre-season games, and boss Elsner has no intention of using the 27-year-old while his future is up in the air.

He said: “I have decided to restrict the squad I will work with. So only those whose head is committed to the Amiens project this season will play for me.

“We need players who are 100% committed to the club. Players who are trying to leave won’t be involved.”

Zungu has also attracted interest in Germany, but Steven Gerrard’s side remain favourites to land the 29-times-capped star.

▪ Gheorghe Hagi has revealed he advised his son, Ianis, to sign for Rangers this summer because he would be surrounding himself with good players.

Hagi junior turned his loan move from Genk into a £3m permanent transfer, and is set to be a key man.

His dad, the former Barcelona and Real Madric icon, was at Ibrox in February to watch his son turn in a superb display as Rangers fought back to beat Braga.

Hagi Senior said: “A player will only become a big star if he has good teammates next to him.

“I got all the credit for Romania’s performance in the 1994 World Cup but I was only able to play so well because I had so many players of huge quality next to me.

“So when Ianis was looking for advice about his next career move, I told him: ‘You are playing with a strong team at Rangers, who have some great players.

“‘You will play better if you stick with them’.”
