New Ger Leon saddened by Wigan ‘injustice’

Rangers defender Leon Balogun admits he is still seething after seeing the EFL relegate former club Wigan to League One.

The Berlin-born Nigerian international spent the second half of last season on loan to the Lancashire outfit from parent club Brighton.

Wigan finished the season with 59 points but, following a 1-1 final-day draw with promoted Fulham on July 22, they were relegated from the Championship after being hit with a 12-point penalty for being plunged into administration just one month after being bought by new Hong Kong-based owners.

Free agent Balogun signed a one-year deal with Rangers two days later.

“Do I feel an injustice about what happened to Wigan? Definitely,” he claimed.

“I’m sad actually, as I really enjoyed my stay at the club. The people there are nice and no one deserves what has happened. It’s such a shame.

“We had a positive goal difference, we actually achieved 59 points but then to be relegated is tough. I just hope that the club can recover soon.”

Clyde midfielder Chris McStay, son of Celtic great Paul McStay, has opted to end his time with the Bully Wee and recommence his career in Australia.

The 24-year-old joined the Broadwood club, where he played alongside Ray Grant, the son of his dad’s team-mate Peter Grant in February 2018, and went on to make 87 appearances during which he scored seven times, recently returned to Australia to be reunited with his family and has informed Clyde boss Danny Lennon that he wants to remain at home.

Lennon said: “Chris has decided to look elsewhere to further his football career. He has been a valuable contributor in our journey from the bottom of League 2 to the middle of League 1.”

“He leaves with our gratitude and we wish him every success.”
