Steven Fletcher insists manager Michael O’Neill was a huge factor in signing for Stoke City after talks over a switch to Celtic broke down.

The Scotland international striker signed a two-year deal with the English Championship side on Friday after leaving Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer.

It was reported that the Bhoys had only offered the former Hibs, Wolves, Burnley and Sunderland marksman a 12-month contract.

He was also linked with Derby County.

But the 33-year-old admits the vision ex-Northern Ireland boss O’Neill (inset) has for the Potters was also a big attraction.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted. It’s the next step in my career and it’s a massive club to come and play for.

“I spoke to the manager about a month ago, and it was a good conversation.

“After I walked out of that meeting, I knew I’d really love to work with him. He was one of the key factors in me signing.

“The way he sees this club and where he wants it to be were the main points I took away.”

Fletcher scored 13 goals in 30 appearances for the Owls last season, and is desperate to replicate that form as Stoke target a return to the Premier League. He added: “I’ve come off a good season, so hopefully I can carry that on.

Celtic winger Marin Shved has joined Belgian club KV Mechelen on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old signed for the Hoops in January, 2019 from Karpaty Lviv, and was immediately loaned back to the Ukrainian side.

He made the first of three appearances for Celtic at the start of last season, scoring against Nomme Kalju in a Champions League qualifier in Estonia.
