Downsize to upscale your retirement

-

Downsizing. It’s a word that can provoke strong reactions. For some, swapping endless gardens and empty rooms for a more manageable home offers freedom. Others might hear downsizing and assume the worst; that it demands sacrificing comfort or luxury, or leaving behind a beloved family home. Happily, there are now more and more options to suit retirees looking to change up their lifestyle – which should mean that it’s easier than ever to embrace all the benefits that come with downsizing. Those people who associate downsizing with freedom have it right, if you ask us. Choose the right new home and you can set yourself up to enjoy your dream retirement lifestyle. The question is, what are you looking for in a new home as you retire? Age Scotland and ScotInform surveyed people aged 55 and over across Scotland to find out more about their current homes and the suitability of their homes as they age. The National Housing Survey Results 2020 revealed that, for respondents thinking about moving, priorities included being close to local shops and services (41%), a smaller or more manageable home (29%) and a property that could be adapted to changing needs over time (23%). It also showed that there was a preference for living on one floor, with many looking to move to a bungalow or flat. Your priorities might differ or they might match these results – regardless, keeping your personal priorities in mind when downsizing will help you make the right choice for you. So how do you decide? Here are some of the main downsizing options you’ll need to consider, to get you started on your retirement plan.

RETIREMENT VILLAGES

Often quite self-contained retirement villages can work great if you want to live independently while also having safety and security. Some will have community facilities like cafes, and possibly even community events, which are ideal for ensuring you can remain active and social. The houses or properties in these villages will also likely have been designed with easy management and accessibility in mind.

LUXURY APARTMENTS

Swap space for luxury, convenience and location with a modern apartment. Many new or updated developments come with modern features, like electric car charging points and the latest energy-efficient measures. Some are age-exclusive, which means residents have to be over a certain age to qualify for an apartment, but you’ll still have your freedom and independence.

SPECIALIST HOUSING

There are also retirement housing options that offer varying levels of support or care, from emergency alarm systems to staff who provide assistance with washing and dressing. Depending on your particular situation and care needs as you downsize, ongoing health conditions for example, you may want to consider these options too. Before you take the plunge and downsize, make sure to do your research to find the best option to suit your lifestyle, wants, needs and budget. You’ll find there are lots of possibilities to explore.
