Davis: Never mind the quality, let’s get better

Steven Davis believes Rangers aren’t yet at their best.

The midfielder admits that fans have watched seasons start brightly in the past, only for the title challenge to fade away.

He was echoing the thoughts of manager Steven Gerrard after beating Dundee United – he believes the Ibrox men aren’t yet relentless enough to start talking about becoming champions.

Davis said: “I think we definitely have the quality to do it, but we need to go and show it.

“That’s what it’s all about and we’re not going to get carried away with the results we’ve had so far this season.

“There are still areas of the game we need to improve on and we’ll continue to look to do that, individually and collectively.

“I think we started last season very strongly as well and I certainly feel the quality of the squad has got stronger.”

Setting a new record by going seven games at the start of the league without conceding is something that has delighted Davis.

He added: “Good teams are always about balance and we feel we have that.

“The record is something we should be proud of as a team. We’re defending from the front and everyone is buying into that.”

Dundee United boss Micky Mellon wasn’t too downhearted by his side’s 4-0 defeat at Ibrox.

He praised his team for the manner of their performance.

They went toe-totoe with Rangers early on and kept trying to score until the final seconds.

He said: “We were determined to come and give it a right good go because that’s the type of Dundee United team I want to be the manager of.

“I don’t want to us to sit on the edge of the 18-yard box.

“There’s stuff we know we have to improve on, but there were also periods of the game when we did OK.

“The most disappointing thing is that we lost four goals.

“There are times when we need to be better with the football and show that bit more belief at times when we do get in dangerous areas.”

Mellon signalled that he will continue to encourage his players to attack when they face Rangers and Celtic.

He added: “There’s a gap between the Old Firm and the other sides because of money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a right good go and try to improve to make it a contest.

“We’ll take care of our own business and try to improve this young group of players.”
