Bain is happy to get back playing the Brendan way

Scott Bain believes Celtic have the bravery to rediscover the style that brought them so much success.

The Parkhead keeper first experienced an emphasis on possession football when he was recruited by Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman was big on players being comfortable on the ball – and that included goalies.

It wasn’t something that seemed to be given such importance during Neil Lennon’s recent reign.

There are signs things are moving towards a version of the Rodgers’ method under caretaker boss John Kennedy.

Bain maintains the Parkhead outfit still have men with the bravery to accept possession in tight spots.

He said: “We’ve been able to work on things we’ve been wanting to improve on.

“A lot of the players that were here under Brendan Rodgers are used to that style of play, so it’s not something that’s too foreign to us.

“It comes back to you pretty quickly. It’s a just a case of making sure you have the pictures in your brain for when it comes to a match day.

“It seems to be forgotten that we have good footballers here.

“We have boys that are international players, who can look after the ball and are willing to show that on the pitch.

“It takes a lot of bravery to want to play this way, but I think that’s the way football seems to be going now.

“If you look at the top teams and coaches, they want to keep the ball, they want to play through the lines, break the press and always have an overload of players.

“We have players here that are more than capable of doing that.”

Bain, like many of the Celtic players, faces an uncertain future when a new manager arrives in the summer.

He is currently the man in possession of the gloves but has had spells when he wasn’t even on the bench.

The same goes for £5-million signing Vasilis Barkas, and 23-year-old Conor Hazard.

Bain said: “Since I’ve been here, I’ve just tried to enjoy being at a team like Celtic.

“Whatever my role has been, I’ve always tried to fulfil it to the best of my ability.

“Whether it has been first, second or third choice, I’ve been working hard to improve the goalkeeper that’s playing when we’re training, or working to make myself better and ready for the weekend’s game.

“I’ve always tried to do it to the best of my ability and that’s always kept me focused through whatever situations have been going on throughout the season.

“I think you should always be striving for improvement in yourself.

“Different managers have been in during my time at the club and they’ve had different styles.

“That’s meant it has been a case of adapting and improving, trying to work on your weakness to become a better all-round goalkeeper.”
