Limp display angers rattled Brora boss

- By Alison McConnell SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Brora Rangers manager Steven Mackay admitted that his side just couldn’t live with hat-trick hero Nathan Austin.

The 27-year-old former Falkirk and Inverness striker was one of a number of ex-senior players in the Kelty side.

He terrorised Brora with Mackay blasting the performance from his side as “embarrassing”.

“If you’re going to lose a football match then go down fighting,” he said.

“We downed tools. I said to them it was embarrassing in the second half and not acceptable.

“We talk as a club about going and playing at a higher level but that was nowhere near it.

“I’ve learned a lot in the last week in a bad way, to be honest.

“It’s a good reality check for me. I’ve said how strong we are and can play at a higher level but the last two performances and the Stranraer game we were well short.

“You’ve got to learn from these situations and it’s the pain of setbacks that help you move forward.”

Mackay watched with pride earlier this season as his side put Hearts out of the Scottish Cup but he has warned he won’t hide from making the changes this summer after yesterday’s limp defeat.

“We’ll look at the squad, reflect and we know areas to strengthen in,” he said. “I just didn’t realise how far off we were.

“Barry has a strong side, they know their roles. In Nathan Austin they’ve a striker any team would love to have.

“I love his hunger to want to get in the box and score goals.

“I can admire his desire to score goals and he was the difference.”

While Mackay could accept the defeat he remained irked at the manner of it.

“I felt we executed the plan as we asked for the first 25 minutes,” he said. “But we just switched off like we did in the first leg.

“We were aware of Nathan’s pace and the problems he causes in behind.

“That goal [to equalise] settled them right down and killed us a little bit.We had no real fight or determination to get back in the game.”
