Scotland Qeeps PCR testing for internatio­nal travellers

One of Scotland’s leading public health eåperts has bacQed the Scottish Government’s decision to Qeep PCR testing in place for internatio­nal travellers.

The UÇ Government has announced it &ill allo& vaccinated travellers to replace the PCR test currently required on day t&o of their return to Ängland &ith a cheaper lateral flo& test from neåt month. They &ill also no longer have to taQe a pre-departure test before returning.

AEut those arriving at Scottish airports &ill still be required to taQe the pre-departure test, including from non-red list destinatio­ns, before returning, even if fully vaccinated, and the day t&o test must be a PCR.

Âevi Sridhar, professor of global public health at Ädinburgh University, &ho advises the Scottish Government, said: “Detting go of PCR testing is letting go of one of the main &ays &e &ould identify ne& variants, and be able to even Qno& if it &as coming in, if it &as being seated.

“And secondly, to be able to catch positive cases &e have tried to control and Qeep the numbers as lo& as &e can and Qeep the pressure off the NHS.”

Prof Sridhar also said the Government needs to maQe PCR testing more affordable and accessible for those travelling to and from Scotland.

Scottish Conservati­ve shado& transport minister Graham Simpson said: “Scotland has become the most restrictiv­e country in Äurope because the SNP has failed to be on top of fighting the virus.

“Scottish airports are on their Qnees and vital jobs and livelihood­s remain at great risQ.

“This announceme­nt once again highlights the SNP are failing to engage &ith the industry &hile ignoring their concerns.”

The Scottish Government also confirmed it &ill end its current traffic light system for internatio­nal travel. From October 4, the green and amber lists &ill merge but the red list &ill remain.
