Glass: We have good players, but lack quality

- By Scott Davie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass admits a lack of quality was the decisive factor after watching his side slip to a seventh game without a win.

The Dons have crashed out of Europe and lost to Raith Rovers in the League Cup during that disappointing run.

Now a defeat ironically inflicted by former Aberdeen striker Stevie May’s first goal of 2021 saw them fail to take advantage of slip-ups by rivals Hearts and Hibernian.

Glass insists he can’t ask for any more when it comes to effort but there is a lack of finesse at the moment.

“We need more quality,” was his blunt assessment. “There’s no lack of effort from the players and the players themselves feel there is more quality to give.

“The players will be disappointed in themselves but it will come as they expect more of themselves. There are good players here.

“There are a few of the boys in there well aware of the situation which caused the goal.

“It was a catalogue of events which led to it where three or four players could actually prevent that.

“It is important people do their jobs. You’ve got to get back on it and go to work.”

St Johnstone haven’t exactly been hitting top form themselves so far this season but they were as tough to break down as ever.

They haven’t conceded a single goal in their three away league matches this season but Glass was in no mood to make excuses after his team was booed off at the end.

He added: “It’s not easy to create chances against St Johnstone but I think we created a decent amount although the final third was lacking.

“They are simple things that are easy to rectify, and defensively it is the same thing.

“I am disappointed, the players are disappointed and the fans went home frustrated as well.

“The intent is there from the team, they are trying everything they can and I think it will turn.”

Glass is confident that Ryan Hedges and Marley Watkins will be fit for next Saturday’s trip to Paisley.
