First win, but Farke leaves Norwich City

-

Norwich have announced the departure of head coach Daniel Farke with immediate effect.

The German leaves Carrow Road despite the Canaries winning their first Premier League game of the season, 2-1 at Brentford.

Farke had been under increasing pressure after Norwich had failed to win any of their opening 10 games in the top flight this term.

A magnificent solo goal from Mathias Normann and Teemu Pukki’s penalty secured victory.

They held on for the final half an hour, after Rico Henry hauled Brentford back into the match.

“It was a long wait. We’ve had a tough start for many reasons,” said Farke before the news of his departure broke. “So to get that first win under your belt always feels good for the confidence and the self-belief and now the table looks a bit closer as well.”

Brentford could not net a leveller as Norwich survived a late siege.

“It was a good performance,” said Bees manager Thomas Frank.

“We started well and then Normann out of nowhere suddenly becomes Messi, beats five players and puts in it with his wrong foot.”

Patrick Vieira believes his Crystal Palace team are starting to show their potential as they made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory over Wolves.

Wilfried Zaha broke the deadlock in the 61st minute and Conor Gallagher wrapped up the points late on with a deflected second as the hosts followed up their efforts at Manchester City last weekend.

Vieira said: “We showed that we improve as a team and this is what we wanted to do.

“We know the team has potential and the potential is starting to be seen, but we still need to keep that work ethic and momentum going.

VAR had a say, overruling assistant referee Peter Kirkup’s decision to flag Zaha offside when he slotted home.

And John Brooks in Stockley Park was called up again when Joel Ward fouled Rayan Ait-Nouri and referee Graham Scott pointed to the spot, but replays showed the initial contact happened outside the area.

Isaac Hayden salvaged a point for Newcastle United as they drew 1-1 at high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion, who ended the match with 10 men.

Brighton had taken the lead from the penalty spot halfway through the first half, with Leandro Trossard sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Against the run of play, Newcastle struck a 65th-minute equaliser when the Hayden volleyed home.

Prospective Magpies manager Eddie Howe was among the crowd as the club edged closer to making an appointment.

In added-time, Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off for a foul on Callum Wilson, preventing the forward from making a clear run in on goal.
