Ticket to ride: Ullapool the ideal destination to take in the scenery on two wheels

- By Scott Paterson and Georgina Mckenzie Smith mail@sundaypost.com

Ullapool is the perfect destination for active holidaymakers. With so much beautiful scenery to explore, it’s just a question of transport.

Bikes are the ideal option for taking in as much ground as possible, while still having fun and getting fit – and Ullapool Bike Hire is the place to get kitted out.

Ben Mueller, Tom Grant and Matthew Haughey are the directors at Ullapool Bike Hire and they ensure that every customer receives individual attention when visiting their business.

“The diversity of folk hiring bikes is one of our favourite things about running the business. Everyday we learn something new and we are trying to expand our route selection as well, which means we have to cycle ourselves and get out to create or find new trails.

“We are working with partners in the area to expand the public cycling network around the village as well as to encourage more locals and visitors alike to cycle rather than driving locally.

“This change to a more active community is a big driver for us and the business.”

Ullapool and the surrounding area is an excellent place to explore on bike and Ullapool Bike Hire caters for the whole family, with a selection of hybrid and standard bikes in sizes to suit everyone.

They also offer a wide range of routes to suit all abilities and schedules, even offering a drop-off and pick-up service for the bikes if you are planning on following a route a little outside of the town centre.

One of the directors’ enviable roles is seeking out new routes for their customers, and with so much beautiful scenery to choose from they are really spoiled for choice.

“The scenery changes further north, compared to the greener parts south of Ullapool. We are sitting right on the edge where we have big mountain ranges to the south and single hills to the north.

“Just cycling in Assynt on the road is special with these single mountains popping out of the peatland.

“With Loch Achall, we have a special place to go off the main road into a quiet glen and explore the countryside – swimming, enjoying the peacefulness and just letting the soul relax.”

Don’t miss: Stunning Corrieshalloch gorge and the dramatic suspension bridge over River Droma.
