Dick Campbell was left “a wee bit annoyed” after his side were held to a draw by ninth-placed Queen of the South.

In a second half that was end-to-end it was Queens who took the lead when Innes Cameron netted his first goal for the club from a Max Johnston cross after 55 minutes.

Arbroath responded 12 minutes later though when Michael McKenna was on hand to fire home his 11th league goal of the season.

“Both teams went about their jobs right. I wouldn’t say a draw was a fair result, I thought we had more chances to win the game,” said Campbell.

“I’m not going to fault my players for anything, bar not scoring goals.

“The chances that we had were fabulous, although in fairness to Queen of the South in the last 10 minutes they have had two breakaways and they could have got something out of that. I’m just a wee bit annoyed.”

Arbroath dominated for a spell in the second half after Queens took the lead. Luke Donnelly’s curling shot from the edge of area was tipped wide by Queens’ goalie Sol Brynn.

The keeper, on loan from Middlesbrough, made another sublime save moments later to deny Anton Dowds from equalising with a header.

Either side could have won the game in the closing stages with Cameron and Donnelly both passing up chances one-on-one with the keeper.

Campbell believed that Doonhamers were happy with a draw from the opening whistle.

“I’m sure Allan Johnston will be absolutely delighted with a draw. It was very clear to me in the first half that they were happy with a draw,” he said.

“They’re taking 10 minutes on every throw-in and set-piece. It’s called managing the game, but I call it wasting time”.

Johnston was no less annoyed than Campbell at the draw though, also pointing out his side’s poor finishing.

“We had good chances that we’ve probably got to finish, but they had chances as well. Sol (Brynn) made some good saves,” he said.

“On reflection, a draw is probably a fair result.”
