When it comes to DIY brows, some of us have the knack, while others just don’t. But help is at hand. Fides Baldesberger, CEO of tweezer brand Rubis, gives us her top tips on how to pluck like a professional.

When to pluck

“Hair has three cycles of growth,” explains Fides.“If you see a hair at the surface, two others will follow soon after. One will crop up in about two weeks. The other you won’t see for six to eight weeks.”

To ensure beautiful brows, Fides suggests a maintenance schedule of shaping every three to four weeks, plucking out regrowth every two to three days and trimming once a month.

“When tweezing, the biggest tip I can give is to use a slanttipped tweezer. Not only do these tweezers carefully remove the faintest and the stubbiest of stray hairs, but they help to avoid breaking off the hair close to the base and causing unnecessary pain with their secure grip. Get close to the base and always tweeze in the direction of hair growth. Follow any plucking with aloe vera to sooth the pores.”

How to shape

Fides says the biggest mistake is over-tweezing.

“Many people try to create perfect brow symmetry, but no one’s brows are perfectly symmetrical. What happens is you’ll continue to remove hair, trying to get them even, and by the time you’ve finished, your brows have become very thin.

“Plucking one hair at a time and then standing back and reviewing in a mirror will help. Also avoid overplucking underneath your brows. Focus on strays and, if in doubt, use a brow pencil, powder or pomade to draw in your natural shape and give a clear indication of what hairs to avoid.”

Before you start

Fides’ top tip is make sure your brows are clean and discard any make-up residue or dead skin cells before you touch them.

“It is best to tweeze your eyebrows once you have exfoliated and followed with

moisturiser to soften the skin,” she says.“Moisturising will not only help soften the skin, it helps hydrate the skin so it’s easier to pluck out hairs with minimal to no pain.

“If your skin is a little red afterwards, apply gentle pressure with a cold facecloth. You can seal your brows with a brow oil or serum.”

When shaping, Fides says follow your natural brow shape and where the hair naturally grows as a guideline, whether you want to make them thicker or thinner. If you want to create a thicker brow, pluck only the stray hairs out of your natural brow shape, and avoid overplucking.”
