Restaurant of the week
Hendersons, Edinburgh
Location
Just a few minutes’ walk from the King’s Theatre, Hendersons is well placed for a pre-theatre dinner. Good bus links to the city centre, and limited on-street parking nearby.
First impressions
It is modern and boasts stylish interiors, including faux floral displays and eyecatching lighting. Tres chic.
Service
From start to finish, the staff could not have been more helpful. We visited for a birthday celebration, and they were happy to let us bring our own cake – complete with candles, of course.
Menu
Hendersons originally opened its doors in 1962, but was closed last year as a result of the pandemic. This new location, run by the original founder’s grandson, continues the family legacy of providing excellent vegetarian and vegan dishes, focusing on locally-sourced produce and sustainable ingredients.
Taste
It’s pretty hard to please everyone in a party of eight, but Hendersons managed the task wonderfully. Every dish ordered was fresh, tasty and wellportioned, and there was even options for our smallest dinner, a picky three-year-old. Highlights include the banana blossom fish and chips (don’t be put off, it tastes nothing like fruit!) and the veggie haggis with root mash and whisky tarragon cream. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t leave without trying the cider poached pear – a delight of delicate flavours.
Ambience
Warm, friendly and relaxed, we could happily have stayed at our tables for hours.
Value
Our bill, which included a bottle of red wine and cocktails, came to just over £190. Outstanding value for the quality and service.
