Currie in cruise control to see off Marr

-

A first-half blitz set up a 34-26 away win for Premiership table-toppers Currie Chieftains over nearest rivals Marr at Fullarton Park, writes DAVID BARNES.

Mark Cairns’ men raced into a 27-7 half-time lead thanks to tries from Wallace Nelson, Joe Reynolds, James McCaig and Rhys Davies, supplemented by two conversions and a penalty from Gregor Hunter.

A second try from McCaig in the second half secured the win, but Marr fought back with tries from Fraser Grant, Blair Jardine, Jamie Shepherd and Scott Bickerstaff, plus two conversions from Colin Bickerstaff, which meant the Ayrshire men at least took a bonus point from the contest.

It was a big win, but head coach Cairns still wasn’t fully satisfied. “We have some really good players who put some really good phases together but it’s frustrating because we got a bit complacent,” he said.

“We’re striving for that 80-minute performance – but it does become difficult when you get so far ahead to keep focus and to keep the structure which got you there in the first place.”

Meanwhile, Aberdeen Grammar’s long wait to taste success in this Premiership campaign came to an end in scintillating style with a 38-13 win over play-off chasing Glasgow Hawks at Rubislaw.

It is not enough to lift them off the foot of the table but has given them a glimmer of hope that relegation can be avoided.

Unfortunately for Aberdeen, fellow strugglers Jed-Forest and Musselburgh also picked up big wins, with Edinburgh Accies beaten 29-13 at Riverside Park and Selkirk losing 40-27 at Stoneyhill.

Hawick moved to joint second in the table with a 48-22 home win over GHA.
