Liverpool need another monumental Euro effort

-

English clubs had a mixed bag of results in Europe last midweek.

Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Atalanta. It’s not often you can say that Jurgen Klopp’s side were well beaten, but that was the story last Thursday.

In previous years, the Reds have overturned some serious deficits in Europe and this will require another monumental effort.

The Italians are a very accomplished side and they deserve great credit. They will more than fancy their chances in their own backyard on Thursday.

It looks as though West Ham also face a really difficult task to overturn their 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso’s side have been superb this season and are 42 games unbeaten.

David Moyes and his players have excelled in Europe the past couple of years and it will take an unbelievable performance in London to win this tie.

In the Champions League, Arsenal and Manchester City are very much in the hunt for the semi-finals.

The Gunners drew 2-2 at home to Bayern Munich and they showed spirit and quality to fight back.

I would not rule them out in Germany as question marks remain over Bayern’s levels of consistency.

The game of the week may well be at The Etihad as City take on Real Madrid.

The first leg was mouthwatering stuff and ended 3-3. From start to finish, both teams entertained.

Phil Foden scored a screamer and he has been absolutely brilliant this season.

I think Pep Guardiola’s men can do it but I’d never completely rule out Carlo Ancelotti. He knows his stuff and can produce a victory, for sure.

Aston Villa won their Conference League tie at home to Lille to give the English teams a solitary victory.

A 2-1 lead is slender but it’s nice to have. It was also good to see John McGinn on the scoresheet.

I’m confident Unai Emery’s team will progress to the last four of this competition.
