England man marking

- By Ben Rumsby

6

Joe Hart A virtual spectator until the equaliser. Aside from a Sergei Ignashevich header straight at him, he did not have a save to make.

7

Kyle Walker Played as a virtual winger, tormenting Georgi Schennikov and setting up Adam Lallana’s early chance well. Final ball could be more consistent though.

6

Gary Cahill ■ Needless yellow card having done everything that was asked of him when Russia looked like fashioning an opportunity, making timely interceptions.

6

Chris Smalling Should have done better with a header he sent straight at Igor Akinfeev from Harry Kane’s corner. Defensively, he strolled through much of the game.

5

Danny Rose Made a few errors in possession that might have been more costly against a better side and a poor final ball.

8

Eric Dier Magnificent – and surprise – free-kick on his competitive England debut. He had so little to do shielding the back four, maybe he just got bored.

8

Wayne Rooney Given space in his new role and took full advantage, orchestrating England’s attacks and even throwing in some great backtracking.

7

Delle Ali Hard to believe this was his first competitive international start. Treated the biggest game of his life as if it was any other. A constant threat.

7

Adam Lallana On completely the same wavelength as Alli, who he set-up for an early volley. Forced a sharp save but also wasted England’s best firsthalf chance.

5

Harry Kane Bizarrely still taking corners, which almost paid off early on but became an increasingly odd use of this season’s Premier League top scorer.

6

Raheem Sterling Thrills and frustrates in equal measure. Denied by a superb recovery tackle from Igor Smolnikov and delivered a good cross to Alli early on. Wasteful at times.
