England man marking

- By Matt Law

Joe Hart

Not quite a spectator, Hart had to be alert to stop a second-half effort from Agius. Otherwise had absolutely nothing to do. 6

Kyle Walker

Spurs right-back did not have to worry too much about his defensive duties and had the time and freedom to get forward to support Walcott. 6

Gary Cahill

Having managed to shake off illness, Cahill enjoyed one of the easiest afternoons of his international career. Shot just wide from a corner. 6

John Stones

The Man City man will have an important role to play as England’s defensive ballplayer in Southgate’s plan to mould a brave and attacking team. 6

Ryan Bertrand

Started ahead of the hamstrung Danny Rose, but Bertrand suffered a hamstring problem of his own and had to be replaced after just 19 minutes. 6

Jordan Henderson

Given the nod over Eric Dier and enjoyed his day with some fine, floated passes, one of which was headed home by Sturridge. He also set up Alli. 8

Wayne Rooney

Given his preferred midfield role, but was lucky to stay on after studs-up tackle. It will do England and him no favours if he keeps being indulged. 5

Theo Walcott

Handed his first England start in a year and was involved in the opening goal with a dribble from the right. Had attempt saved after break. 6

Dele Alli

Picked up where he left off for Spurs last week with a display full of attacking threat. Reacted well to follow up own shot for goal. Missed a late sitter. 7

Jesse Lingard

The first beneficiary of Southgate’s Under-21s tenure. Given a chance on the left and impressed with some intelligent runs and passing. 8

Daniel Sturridge

Had perfect chance to stake his claim with Harry Kane out injured. Fluffed an early sitter, but planted a brilliant header into the net to open the scoring. 7

Subs

Danny Rose (for Bertrand, 19) Marcus Rashford

(for Walcott, 67) Jamie Vardy (for Sturridge, 73)
