Wales man marking

- By Tom Cary

Leigh Halfpenny

Levelled scores with an early penalty but uncharacteristically wayward from the tee and offered little in counter-attack.

5 Ken Owen

One miscommunication at start of second half, when not a single Wales player jumped for his throw-in, summed up Wales’s day.

5 Alex Cuthbert

Struggled to get into the game. Should maybe have straightened up his line and looked for support when involved in a race for corner.

5 Samson Lee

Lucky to escape Joubert’s attention for persistently binding on to Sio’s arm. Brilliantly targeted by Australia for Hodge’s first-half try.

5 Scott Williams

Late replacement for Jonathan Davies and scored try after chasing his own grubber. But part of back line that struggled to contain Australia.

6 Luke Charteris

Alun Wyn Jones was badly missed. Charteris singled out for criticism in failing to halt the rolling maul that led to Stephen Moore’s try.

5 Jamie Roberts

Largely anonymous. Not a reassuring ‘truck it up the middle’ to speak of and powerless to stem the tide in defence.

5 Bradley Davies

Work-rate was unquestioned, as usual, but needed to make more of an impact in the Wales engine room.

5 George North

Struggled positionally out on the left wing. Missed a worrying number of tackles in the first 40 minutes.

5 Dan Lydiate

Took over the captaincy after Gethin Jenkins went off but completely anonymous up until that point.

4 Dan Biggar

Earned an early yellow card for a tug back on Haylett-Petty, to make an already difficult task mountainous.

6 Justin Tipuric

Lovely dummy to help set up Scott Williams’s try, but struggled to snaffle any balls up against the world’s best in Hooper and Pocock.

5 Rhys Webb

One of Wales’ better players on the day. Carried off with what looked like a twisted ankle.

7 Ross Moriarty

Wales’ standout performer. Made an impression early on with a nice pick and go and a great tackle on Scott Sio. Promising from 22-year-old.

8 Gethin Jenkins

Typically lionhearted on his 137th Test appearance. Gave his all in the first 40 minutes but powerless to stop Australia’s momentum.

6 Replacements

Scott Baldwin (Jenkins 58), Nicky Smith (Owens 58), Tomas Francis (Lee 58), Cory Hill (Davies 63), James King (Lydiate 68), Gareth Davies (Webb 64), Sam Davies (Biggar 65), Hallam Amos (North 61).
