England marking
7 Mike Brown Full-back
Mopped up plenty of loose kicks – and there were plenty of those – and contributed assists for the May and, rather fortunately, Lawes tries.
7 Mako Vunipola Prop
The Premiership Player of the Month was not quite at the levels he was at for Saracens in the Champions Cup, although there is no disgrace in that.
6 Marland Yarde Wing
Showed up well in May’s try but made a couple of needless errors. Would be no surprise if Semesa Rokoduguni comes in next week.
6 Dylan Hartley Hooker
Line-out was a solid unit but he showed some rust in the loose given his lack of game time. Did well to restore collective discipline after early aberrations.
8 Elliot Daly Centre
Jonathan Joseph will be very worried. Created first try with decoy line and the second with his kick ahead. Also kicked a monster penalty.
5 Dan Cole Prop
Struggled in the scrummaging contests and did not show up as a carrier. Fiji match would seem a good time to give Kyle Sinckler a first start.
7 Owen Farrell Centre
Not his most influential game as England preferred to rely upon the boots of Youngs and Ford. Stunned crowd when he missed a second-half penalty.
8 Joe Launchbury 2nd row
Ensured the absence of Itoje and Kruis was barely felt. Carried like a traditional Springbok lock and popped up with some key turnovers.
7 Jonny May Wing
Faster than a racer snake. In his first England game under Eddie Jones he scored the opening try and created the second with his hustle.
6 Courtney Lawes 2nd row
Claimed maiden international try on his 50th international appearance. Put himself about with some big hits but his handling was very poor.
8 George Ford Fly-half
Capitalised on Youngs’ break to grab the try that killed the game. Improved significantly as the match went on, particularly with his game management.
7 Chris Robshaw Flanker
Stepped out of the shadows with a huge hit on Rudy Paige that roused Twickenham from its stupor. Customary huge shift in defence.
9 Ben Youngs Scrum-half
Underlined his status as firstchoice scrum-half with his best performance at Twickenham in years. Wonderful breaks to set up tries for Ford and Farrell.
6 Tom Wood Flanker
Eddie Jones’ “Rambo” was slightly too gung-ho in the opening stages. Otherwise fulfilled his brief of bringing down South Africa’s big beasts.
8 Billy Vunipola No 8
Demonstrated why he is on the World Player of the Year shortlist by making a game-high 18 carries that got England on the front foot.
