United man marking

- By James Ducker at Old Trafford

David de Gea

The Spaniard will be one of the first to wonder how United failed to win the game. Barely had anything to do before picking the ball out of the net in the last minute.

6

Antonio Valencia

Tore up and down the right flank after returning quicker than expected from a broken wrist. His final ball sometimes disappoints but has become a Mourinho favourite. Could have won a penalty.

7

Phil Jones

This was only his second first-team appearance for United since Jan 2 but he was strong and assured at the back. Could not do much about Giroud getting the run on him for goal.

7

Marcos Rojo

United’s makeshift defence looked like an accident waiting to happen but the Argentinian, so often a weak link, produced one of his more solid displays. Still poor on the ball.

6

Matteo Darmian

Booked for fouling Theo Walcott midway through the first half, he was perhaps fortunate to escape a second yellow for a challenge on Carl Jenkinson.

6

Michael Carrick

United tend to exude much more composure in the middle when the veteran England midfielder plays. An effective screen for Herrera and Pogba.

6

Juan Mata

The Spaniard took his fourth goal of the season beautifully, steering a first-time left-foot shot low into the bottom corner. Must have thought it would be enough to win the game.

7

Ander Herrera

Showed excellent awareness to pull the ball back impressively for Mata’s goal. Dominated the midfield exchanges alongside Pogba.

7

Paul Pogba

This was one of the Frenchman’s more accomplished displays since his return to Old Trafford. Played on the front foot, got forward well and worked hard.

7

Anthony Martial

The France forward drew a good save from Cech in the first half but he was on the periphery too often and still looks a far cry from the player who so impressed in his debut season.

5

Marcus Rashford

Finally unleashed through the middle, he always offered an outlet. His decisionmaking was excellent but he allowed OxladeChamberlain to get past him too easily in lead up to goal.

6

Subs Rooney for Martial (63) 6; Blind for Darmian (64) 6; Schneiderlin for Mata (85). Not used: Romero (g), Depay, Lingard, Young. Booked: Darmian, Rooney, Mata.
