Warnock fury as Bamba sees red
Neil Warnock will read the riot act to Sol Bamba after the defender was sent off in spectacular fashion for angrily confronting the fourth official, his own manager and numerous players in Cardiff ’s 1-1 draw at Ipswich.
Bamba reacted badly to a late tackle by Jonathan Douglas before jabbing his finger in the direction of fourth official Charles Breakspear and brushing off Warnock’s attempts at peacemaking.
The centre-back was shown a red card with 20 minutes left to go but Ipswich were unable to capitalise after Aron Gunnarsson and Luke Varney scored prior to the sending-off.
Warnock said: “I think Douglas has been clever – he has left his studs on the ankle. If the referee had blown for a foul, it would have stopped the hassle.
“I didn’t want to talk to Sol after the game so I will see him tomorrow. He just lost his rag, but it was an aggressive attitude and I don’t condone Sol’s behaviour. For me, he is one of the best in the Championship and that was a blemish I haven’t seen in his make-up.”
Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy admitted that he had never witnessed an incident like Bamba’s before. “I have seen players lose it, and I have lost it myself, but never on the fourth official,” he said.
Elsewhere, the game of the day was at Molineux, where Fulham led Wolves 3-1 with 25 minutes to play but ended up needing a 94th-minute equaliser from Floyd Ayité to rescue a point after an astonishing 4-4 draw.
The visitors scored three times in 10 minutes but Matt Doherty and Ivan Cavaleiro put Wolves level before Dave Edwards thought he had won it in the 90th minute – only for Ayité to ensure it ended all square.
Reading strengthened their grip on third place by beating fellow promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 thanks to a brace from Roy Beerens as Jaap Stam’s men put last weekend’s 5-0 defeat to Fulham behind them.
