McGuire inspires fightback
Leeds Rhinos scored three tries in the final 15 minutes as they battled back to win 30-24 against Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.
Danny McGuire’s late try completed the fightback for the Rhinos, who moved back up to third in the Super League table despite missing Ryan Hall and Kallum Watkins due to international duty.
Leeds coach Brian McDermott praised the 34-year-old stand-off McGuire, along with prop Adam Cuthbertson, as they made their presence felt in the comeback victory.
He said: “I thought Danny McGuire and Adam Cuthbertson were outstanding. Adam was hugely influential in that final 20 minutes, but then Danny McGuire maintained calm and he had a good control over the majority of proceedings.”
Wakefield let slip a 20-0 lead before recovering to beat Leigh 40-26 in a high-scoring contest at the Sports Village. In a what was at times a chaotic, end-to-end encounter, Leigh showed admirable fighting spirit, but it was not enough to stop them slipping to their eighth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
Wakefield made a whirlwind start and were 20 points to the good after only 14 minutes. Their coach, Chris Chester, said: “It was a bizarre game. We deserved the two points but we allowed Leigh back into the game with some poor discipline. Leigh are a good side and we knew they were going to challenge us.”
