Wasps Man Marking

- By Daniel Schofield

Willie le Roux Full-back

Hardly a poor stand-in for Kurtley Beale. Even when his team-mates were wobbling early on, he exuded calm and class.

Mat Mullan Prop

Gave away the penalty that lost Wasps the match but could hardly be faulted having been called back into action after Marty Moore’s injury.

Christian Wade Wing

Generally well shackled by Exeter but, occasionally, he did some serious damage and set up Daly with a perfectly judged kick ahead.

Tommy Taylor Hooker

Still hard to fathom why he is not going to Argentina with England. Line-out creaked at times but so effective over the ball and as a ball-carrier.

Elliot Daly Outside centre

Blew hot and cold. When he was good, he was very good. Bamboozled Exeter’s defence with his running lines.

Phil Swainston Prop

A tough afternoon even before he failed a Head Injury Assessment. Twice penalised by JP Doyle for losing his bind under pressure.

Jimmy Gopperth Inside centre

Horrible start to game summed up by dropping the ball under no pressure but Premiership Player of the Year exploded into life in the second half.

Joe Launchbury Lock

At the heart of everything. His carrying has improved so much and freakish ability to get over the ball for such a big man. Lions snub a mystery.

Josh Bassett Wing

Would have scored with a better bounce of ball from Daly’s grubber. May lack star power of his team-mates, but none of the heart.

Matt Symons Lock

The roadie to Wasps’ rock stars – rarely catches the eye but does the graft so others can shine. Among Wasps’ top tacklers.

Danny Cipriani Fly-half

Looked like he was enjoying himself in second half as he pulled Exeter’s defence to pieces. Kicking from hand was not always on money.

James Haskell Flanker

Inauspicious start as he dropped the first two balls that came his way. Turned up with a couple of big hits but still searching for his very best form.

Dan Robson Scrum-half

Suffered early stage fright coughing up a couple of turnovers. Showed his class with his arcing run and offload for Gopperth’s try.

Thomas Young Flanker

Pulled out of position by Cowan-Dickie for Nowell’s try. Not as influential with ball in hand as he normally is in a Wasps shirt.

Replacements

A Johnson (for Taylor, 65) 6; S McIntyre (for Mullan, 58) 6; M Moore (for Swainston, 27) 6; K Myall (for Symons, 58) 5; G Thompson (for Young, 65) 7; J Simpson (for Robson, 58) 7. Unused Alapati Leiua, Frank Halai.

Nathan Hughes No8

Close to perfection. Every tackle rattled the foundations, skittled defenders like bowling pins and dominant at the breakdown.
