Lions man marking

- By Gavin Mairs

Iain Henderson Lock forward

Failed to take the kick-off and missed two tackles in the first half but at least managed several carries.

5

Stuart Hogg Full-back

Some promising glimpses of his attacking prowess but overall his display was tainted by a number of errors.

6

Ross Moriarty Blindside flanker

Twice lost possession in promising attacking positions but managed to maintain his work-rate impressively.

7

Anthony Watson Winger

Strong finishing for his try that put the Lions in front and chased hard but otherwise did not see enough of the ball.

6

Sam Warburton (captain) Openside flanker

Appeared to be short of match sharpness after his six-week lay-off from a knee injury. The captain should be better for the hit out.

6

Jonathan Joseph Outside centre

Concession of silly late penalty indicative of a frustrating night. Struggled to get into the game and missed three tackles.

5

Taulupe Faletau No 8

The Wales No 8’s carrying was one of the few major positives and his superb tackle prevented a try for Laulala.

7

Ben Te’o Inside centre

One of the few players who took the fight to the Barbarians, leading the way with his strong carrying and direct lines of running.

8

Jamie George Replacement hooker

Replaced Best after 49 minutes and looked comfortable on his Lions debut, throwing accurately and doing the basics well.

6

Tommy Seymour Winger

A virtual spectator in the first half but chased the high balls hard and made yards when he did get the ball.

5

Mako Vunipola Replacement loosehead prop

His carrying made an impact when he replaced Marler (49 mins). Their rivalry for a Test place will be compelling.

6

Jonathan Sexton Fly-half

Well below his best. Missed his first kick at goal, kicked one ball straight into touch and threw a couple of wayward passes.

5

Tadhg Furlong Replacement tighthead prop

Replaced Sinckler (49 mins) and brought a physical presence to a flagging pack with five tackles and two carries.

6

Greg Laidlaw Scrum-half

A disappointing display, missing two tackles in the first half, one of which allowed Sam Anderson-Heather to score.

5

George Kruis Replacement lock forward

The Saracens lock replaced Henderson (49 mins), adding some ballast and provided the Lions with a source of line-out ball.

6

Joe Marler Loosehead prop

Held up a driving maul to prevent a try and delivered a strong scrummaging performance.

6

Justin Tipuric Replacement flanker

Replaced Warburton (66 mins). A brilliant take from a high ball almost led to a try for Rhys Webb. Injected pace and energy.

6

Rory Best Hooker

Won a couple of turnovers, carried strongly and at times acted as a link in the midfield. Also made 11 tackles.

6

Owen Farrell Replacement fly-half

Gave the Lions more control and direction after replacing Sexton (48 mins). Twice involved in build-up to Watson’s try.

6

Kyle Sinckler Tighthead prop

Required strapping to his right elbow after a knock in the warm-up but it did little to curb a high-energy display.

6

Rhys Webb Replacement scrum-half

Should have been brought on before the 57th minute for Laidlaw and brought some fizz to the back line.

6

Alun Wyn Jones Lock forward

Finished the game as captain after Warburton went off and put in a sweatsoaked shift. The bedrock of the pack.

7

Eliot Daly Replacement Centre
