Ten Doeschate back to his best as Essex hit back
Ryan ten Doeschate’s first hundred of the season put Essex in a good position after another day of heavy run scoring against Surrey at Guildford.
The Essex captain has struggled to recapture last season’s form when he scored 1,226 runs with four centuries, but he finished unbeaten on 120 with Essex 367 for seven in reply to Surrey’s 399.
Ten Doeschate came in when his side were 134 for four, but Ravi Bopara helped in the rebuilding, contributing 64 in a stand of 120, his first halfcentury of the season.
Samit Patel (78 not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (67) batted the Division Two leaders into a positive position against Gloucestershire in Bristol. The pair added 146 for the third wicket in 54.1 overs to leave the promotion favourites 82 runs behind their hosts with seven first-innings wickets in hand.
