Scotland man marking

- By Jason Burt at Hampden Park

Craig Gordon

Not sure what he was doing with OxladeChamberlain’s goal. Constantly appeared to react late and sloppy with the ball at his feet. 4

Kieran Tierney

Some great recovery work, not least to head Kane’s lobbed shot off the line and was constantly mopping up. Scotland’s best defender. 7

Christophe Berra

Was rarely exposed but that was partly because Scotland defended so deep to give him added protection. England were not able to run at him. 6

Charlie Mulgrew

Took a no-nonsense approach to defending and it was effective enough. Kicked it, headed it, cleared it. Kane still had chances but he coped well enough with striker. 6

Andrew Robertson

Chance opened up in second half for him to shoot but lacked belief and fired high and wide. Still defended diligently but was not able to show his attacking ability. 6 Scott Brown ■ Booked after just two minutes and 30 seconds for a rash challenge on Dele Alli but managed to keep his discipline and tried to unsettle England. Pressed hard. 7

James Morrison

Not the best of games from the midfielder. Tried to press England but was careless and hurried in possession, failing to create, and gave way at half-time. 5

Ikechi Anya

Was a tough match for him as he was unable to really get forward and struggled to cope at times as he was overloaded down his side of the pitch. 5

Stuart Armstrong

Was very good on the ball, showing some neat touches but also had to work incredibly hard to help his team defend. Showed he is an intelligent player. 7

Robert Snodgrass

Most notable contribution was an apparent touchline argument with manager Gordon Strachan. Other than that gave the ball away and was often over-run. 5

Leigh Griffiths

Outstanding. His best game for Scotland and probably in his life. Worked tirelessly and scored with two fabulous free-kicks. His first goals for Scotland. 9

Subs

McArthur for Morrison (46). Shored things up for Scotland. Fraser for Snodgrass (65). Added energy to the attack. Chris Martin for Anya (82).

Not used Marshall (g), Naismith, Bannan, Darren Fletcher, Forrest, Russell Martin, Cairney, Reynolds, Hamilton (g).
