England man marking

-

Joe Hart

The sun caused him problems in first half, Scotland in the second as he had to pick the ball out of the net from two free-kicks. Poor and slow to react. 4

Kyle Walker

He has a habit of making rash, unnecessary challenges as he did on Leigh Griffiths inside the penalty area, but was strong on the ball and coped comfortably. 6

Chris Smalling

Appeared nervous, lacking in understanding with Cahill. Sliced a clearance over own crossbar and was unsure in possession. England needed him to be more composed. 5

Gary Cahill

Not much better than Chris Smalling, also untidy in possession and appeared unsettled by Leigh Griffiths’s relentless running. But improved. 6

Ryan Bertrand

When he got forward England were better. Linked well with Lallana and created chances, especially in first half as England over-ran Scots down flank. 6

Jake Livermore ■

7 Saw a lot of the ball and retained it well. But does he create enough? Booked for high boot on Snodgrass and had a deflected shot against the post.

Eric Dier ■

4 Possibly his worst game in an England shirt. Was booked, lost the ball, appeared leaden. And did not create – apart from a lofted pass for Kane. Has to offer more than this.

Adam Lallana

When he got on the ball there was more chance of something happening, especially when he dropped a shoulder and ran at the defence. 6

Dele Alli

Targeted by Scots with Scott Brown, in particular, looking to unsettle (provoke?) him. Fortunately he did not react and took up some good positions but was not at his best. 6

Marcus Rashford

Struggled to get into the game and saw the one chance he had deflected wide. Maybe should have scored. Chosen to take the corners and that did not work out either. 5

Harry Kane

Saved the match. Missed four chances – blazing over the bar, missed his kick and had a lob cleared off the line and a header – before scoring at the death. 7

Subs

Oxlade-Chamberlain for Rashford (65). Came on and scored a superb solo goal Sterling for Alli (83). Probably should have come on earlier. Defoe for Livermore (90).

Not used Forster (g), Trippier, Lingard, Gibson, Stones, Jones, Cresswell, Heaton (g), Butland (g).
