Sport in brief
Cycling
Mark Cavendish was denied a chance of victory in stage two of the Tour of Slovenia by a crash in the closing stages. Dimension Data’s Cavendish, attempting to prove his fitness ahead of next month’s Tour de France after being sidelined for nearly three months, was caught behind one of multiple crashes towards the end of the 106-mile stage. His lead-out man Mark Renshaw avoided the pile-up, that saw stage one winner Sam Bennett hit the deck, and finished third as Orica-Scott’s Luka Mezgec took victory.
Canoeing
Kimberley Woods won gold ahead of Mallory Franklin as the pair made it a British one-two in the C1 women’s event at the World Cup in Prague. Franklin and Woods will race in today’s K1 semi-finals.
Cricket
Graeme Cremer claimed five wickets as Zimbabwe levelled the two-match one-day international series with Scotland after a six-wicket win in Edinburgh.
Tennis
Angelique Kerber and Gaël Monfils have accepted wild cards for the Aegon International tournament at Eastbourne later this month.
Sailing
In light, shifty winds, Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand made fewer mistakes than Jimmy Spithill and Oracle Team USA and won the first two races of the 35th America’s Cup.
Hockey
England qualified for the quarterfinals of the Hero Hockey World League after a convincing 7-3 win over Malaysia. Two goals apiece for Barry Middleton, Mark Gleghorne and Sam Ward as well as a strike from Chris Griffiths rounded off a dominant display for Bobby Crutchley’s side, much to the delight of the home crowd at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. England will now play Argentina today.
