Lions man marking
Jonathan Sexton Fly-half
Given the injury concern about Farrell, this was a display to hearten supporters. Ireland fly-half looked much more like his commanding self.
George Kruis Lock
Proved again why England forward is so important to the Lions’ hopes of both putting pressure on the All Blacks line-out and serving up quality ball.
Kyle Sinckler Replacement prop
Replaced Furlong (65 mins) This was not a night for the prop’s running game but his energetic impact looks to have sealed his place on the bench for the first Test.
Leigh Halfpenny Full-back
Gatland had demanded a more combative aerial contest from his back three and he got it from Halfpenny, who bossed the back field. Immaculate place-kicking haul of 20 points.
Conor Murray Scrum-half
Picked up where he left off against Crusaders, but used longer box-kicks to keep Maori back three guessing. Brought a physical sniping game behind dominant pack.
Peter O’Mahony Flanker
Captained the side with few words but mighty deeds. Like Kruis is one of the Lions key line-out operators and looks to have sealed his Test place.
Iain Henderson Replacement lock
Replaced Kruis (60 mins) After a subdued display in the opening game has emerged as one of the most improved players on tour in the most competitive area.
Anthony Watson Wing
Much more effective kick-chase but he had to do most of his work without the ball. The Lions must exploit his explosive running against the All Blacks.
Mako Vunipola Prop
The England prop has been one of the most consistent performers in the squad. Carried hard and superb work at breakdown and around the fringes.
Sean O’Brien Flanker
Huge ballast at the back of the Lions driving mauls and put the Maori attack and breakdown under severe pressure with his line-speed and physicality.
Sam Warburton Replacement flanker
Replaced O’Mahony (64 mins) The tour captain took a good restart and will have benefited from more game time, but does not have enough minutes under his belt to start the first Test.
Jonathan Davies Outside-centre
One of the most welcome displays of the night for the Lions. The Wales centre finally burst into life on this tour and just in time, linking superbly with Sexton.
Jamie George Hooker
A composed performance that should seal his place in the Test side. A faultless line-out and carried with power and dynamism.
Taulupe Faletau No8
The Maori All Blacks kept kicking restarts to the Wales No 8 and his returns were outstanding, as was carrying and control at base of the scrum. Arguably the Lions’ most influential forward.
Greig Laidlaw Replacement scrum-half
Replaced Murray (67 mins) Kept the Maori on the back foot when the Lions were in rampant form with his kicking game but at times slowed the game down.
Ben Te’o Inside-centre
Gives the Lions the option to be direct when they want to and this power-play option could be a key variation against the All Blacks. He became a bigger influence as the Maori defence tired.
Tadhg Furlong Prop
This was one of the most impressive scrummaging performances of the tour from the Lions and Furlong was central to that.
Ken Owens Replacement hooker
Replaced George (65 mins) Joined the fray when the Lions had already taken control of the game but ensured there was no let-up in the pressure.
Dan Biggar Replacement fly-half
Replaced Sexton (67 mns) Looked to run the ball when it was on and probed for gaps in the Maori defence as they tired.
George North Wing
It was an uncertain start for the Wales wing and his error allowed Messam to gather for his try. Yet he grew into the game once the Lions were able to send him into dangerous areas.
Maro Itoje Lock
Mixed display. Too many flashes of indiscipline early on, conceding two penalties in the first half, but you had to admire his ferocious impact on the forward contest and deserved his try.
Jack McGrath Replacement prop
Replaced Vunipola (60 mins) Is unlucky to be competing with Vunipola for the same position as proved he is also a very effective ball-carrying presence and the scrum did not waver.
Elliot Daly Replacement wing
Replaced North (64 mins) His huge left boot is a point of difference for the Lions and his natural footballing ability and versatility should see him named on the bench next Saturday.
