All Blacks man marking
8 Beauden Barrett Fly-half
Such a classy operator. Wonderful pick-up up running backwards an early sign of his skills. Moved to full-back when Ben Smith went off but still infuential.
8 Sam Whitelock Lock
Retallick’s partner was not quite as prominent but similarly important. Nice line-out steal off Ken Owens’s first throw.
8 Charlie Faumuina Rep for Franks 54
Rock solid when he came on, an almighty shove from a scrum shortly after he and Crockett came on leading to Ioane’s try in the corner.
7 Ben Smith Full-back
The All Blacks initially missed Smith – any team would – when he departed the field after 27 minutes, necessitating a reshuffle in the All Black back line.
9 Aaron Smith Scrum-half
Showed his full box of tricks. The speed of his play bewildered the Lions at times. Quick-thinking led to Taylor’s try and instrumental in Ioane’s as well. So good.
7 Jerome Kaino Flanker
Not overly prominent. A collision with his own team mate Cane was about his most notable contribution but showed usual efficiency. Made way for Ardie Savea.
7 Scott Barrett Rep for Read 77
Came on for New Zealand’s captain in the final few minutes but not enough time to show what he could do.
8 Israel Dagg Wing
Great tackle on Elliot Daly to prevent an early Lions try in corner. Played a part in Codie Taylor’s try, helping to move the ball on. Just overcooked an attempted crossfield kick to Rieko Ioane.
8 Joe Moody Prop
One of the areas the Lions had really hoped for more was the set-piece. Moody played his part in making sure the All Blacks lacked for nothing in that department.
9 Sam Cane Flanker
Brilliant performance from the All Blacks’ openside. Carried well. Offloaded well. Barely put a foot wrong.
8 Ardie Savea Rep for Kaino 47
Upstaged Kaino when he came on for him after the break. Absolute beast, although he was bumped by Jonathan Davies at one point.
8 Ryan Crotty Outside centre
Rushed back from injury by the All Blacks and you could see why. The Crusader was magnificent until he picked up a hamstring injury after 32 minutes.
8 Codie Taylor Hooker
Huge pressure on the 26-year-old having to step in for Dane Coles. Reacted by finishing off a superb try, picking the ball off his toes in a very Coles-like manner.
9 Kieran Reid No8
Captain fantastic. After six weeks out he might have been rusty. Not a bit. Brilliant carrying and offloading. Brilliant pass off the floor that led to Ioane’s first try. Left to a standing ovation.
8 TJ Perenara Rep for A Smith 56
Not as eye-catching as the man he replaced, but equally effective. Won a brilliant penalty at a ruck late on.
7 Sonny Bill Williams Inside centre
Fairly quiet game by his standards. Nice early offload to Crotty and typically solid in defence, although blocked by Te’o when Liam Williams went on his rampaging run that led to Sean O’Brien’s try.
8 Owen Franks Prop
Gave away the penalty that allowed the Lions to get their first points on the board at 10-0 down. But rock solid at scrum time and played his part in the loose.
8 Nathan Harris Rep for Taylor 66
Came on for the man of the moment and helped to see the game out against an increasingly dispirited Lions team.
8 Aaron Cruden Rep for B Smith 27
Lacked the pace to deal with the Lions’ 90m breakaway try. Wonderful offload to Aaron Smith to send Ioane on his way. New Zealand’s half-backs were on another level.
9 Rieko Ioane Wing
The 20-year-old flier, who tormented the Lions in the Blues’ victory, had been having a fairly quiet game. Then he scored two brilliant second-half tries. Rapid.
9 Brodie Retallick Lock
Retallick is arguably the most important player for the All Blacks and he was huge. Both his carrying and his offloading were of the highest order.
8 Wyatt Crockett Rep for Moody 54
This is an All Blacks squad that can scrummage. They lost nothing when Crockett came on for Moody.
7 Anton Lienert-Brown Rep for Crotty 32
Not a bad man to be able to bring on when your starting centre pulls up lame. But had a pretty quiet game by his standards.
