Liverpool man marking

-

Simon Mignolet

Concentration levels tested as much as reflexes. When called upon for only time on 43 minutes produced an important save to deny Lukaku. 7

Joe Gomez

Preferred to Trent Alexander-Arnold, possibly for his greater physical presence. Martial had the pace to trick him, but Gomez stood firm. 7

Joel Matip

Looked more aggressive than usual. Close to giving Liverpool the lead with his clever shot, but – like The Kop – was cursing De Gea’s brilliance. 6

Dejan Lovren

Most often in a duel with Lukaku and the Croatian was up for the fight. But an embarrassing overreaction when trying to get United striker sent off. 6

Alberto Moreno

Yet to convince defensively, but relished taking on Young. Looked as likely as anyone else to get beyond United’s back four. Did well. 6

Jordan Henderson

Forget the playmaker role he is given for England, Henderson is more effective as Liverpool’s spoiler. A different player in a Liverpool shirt. 7

Gini Wijnaldum

Sadio Mane’s injury opened the way for Wijnaldum. The Dutchman tends to save his best for occasions like this. One of the better players. 7

Emre Can

A Klopp favourite who can often appear to be doing the same role as Henderson. Missed a great chance on 56 minutes. Not bad, just not great. 6

Mohamed Salah

Started full of confidence, showing plenty of tricks and turns of pace. But his runs were often from deep and he could not hurt United. 7

Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool needed him to show why Barca want him so much, but Mourinho had Herrera shadowing the Brazilian, forcing him ever deeper. 7

Roberto Firmino

Off-form recently. A couple of sparks, but the dynamism is missing. Worked as tirelessly as ever but must have felt he was playing nine defenders at times. 6

Subs

Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Salah, 78) 6 Sturridge (for Coutinho, 78) 6 Solanke (for Firmino, 90) 6
