Manchester United man marking

- By Chris Bascombe

David de Gea

Produced an amazing save to deny Matip. If not the best keeper in the world, certainly the best at saving with his feet. 8

Matteo Darmian

Had plenty to deal with trying to nullify Salah and will have been grateful on the occasions he was beaten that his midfielders were covering. 6

Chris Smalling

Injury to Bailly gave Smalling his chance. United fans were worried but he had plenty of protection. Handled Firmino well, Coutinho less so. 7

Phil Jones

Has been excellent so far this season. Like Smalling, was more concerned about the midfield runners than Liverpool’s main strikers. 7

Antonio Valencia

Arguably the best right-back in the Premier League. Early tackle on Coutinho demonstrated his excellence. So often United’s best player. 7

Ander Herrera

Had succeeded previously in nullifying Coutinho and was tasked with job again. Dived into early challenges, grateful Matic was mopping up behind. 6

Nemanja Matic

One of United’s midfield spoilers. Few are better and Liverpool’s midfielders and attackers felt his considerable shadow. 7

Anthony Martial

Mourinho will have fancied Martial against Liverpool but the visitors had trouble finding him. Could have been better in a more attacking formation. 5

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Klopp knows him well but would never have seen him in such a defensive formation. Struggled to have any influence. 5

Ashley Young

Surprisingly included in a more advanced role. His selection was purely tactical. It’s doubtful he’ll be on the wing much more this season. 6

Romelu Lukaku

An afternoon for patience for the Belgian, his side not set up to carve numerous chances. When his chance came, Mignolet responded. 5
